The City of Grand Junction and Downtown Grand Junction has launched a pilot project designed to reduce speeds on 4th and 5th Streets that will increase safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Renderings of how each street will be reconfigured are provided and you can provide your input by responding to the short poll.What does each corridor look like in the pilot?Blocks between North Ave. and Ute Ave. on 4th and 5th Streets will undergo a transformation for the pilot phase of the project changing traffic flow from two lanes to one. Each direction will include bike lanes and parking. Impact Fees StudyThe City of Grand Junction has contracted with TischlerBise to develop an updated impact fee study which is required by the municipal code to be reviewed at least every five years by a consultant. Impact Fees Study

The City of Grand Junction is conducting a feasibility study to determine the best options for establishing and improving low-stress active transportation facilities along 7th Street, between the Riverfront Trail and Horizon Drive. This will offer a practical connection to the planned shared-use paths along 26 &frac12; Road (Horizon Drive to Summer Hill Way) and Horizon Drive (existing between 26 &frac12; Road and G Rd).7th Street Active Transportation Corridor7th Street is a significant corridor for north and south travel for pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and personal vehicle traffic. This corridor provides access to Downtown Grand Junction, North Avenue, Colorado Mesa University, Tope Elementary, Grand Junction High School, Intermountain Health St. Mary&rsquo;s Regional Hospital, several healthcare offices, clinics, businesses, Eureka Science Center, and the Art Center. With substantial dining and retail shopping within three blocks of 7th Street along North Avenue and three schools, this is a busy pedestrian area during school months. Grand Valley Transit utilizes the 7th Street corridor, providing bus service along routes three and seven. As one of the few corridors that allows the crossing of railroad tracks adjacent to downtown, 7th Street is the most popular corridor for accessing recreation and entertainment along the Riverfront Trail at Las Colonias. Through the One Grand Junction Comprehensive Plan and Grand Junction Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan, the City of Grand Junction has identified the need to continue to develop a safe, balanced, and well-connected transportation system that enhances mobility of all travel modes along with the importance of installing low-stress, high comfort bike facilities along the active transportation corridors.<h3>How can you help?</h3>Let us know how you travel along 7th Street and what types of improvements you want to see along the corridor. 7th Street Active Transportation Corridor

The final schematic design for updates to Whitman Park was presented to City Council on Monday, August 19. The proposed project features various elements based on feedback from a public survey that received more than 900 responses. View the presentation below.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PnBDmIYzMaU?&wmode=opaque&rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Community members are welcome to add ideas in the tools section!This project page serves as an engagement opportunity for community members to share their ideas on the future of the park, please take the short survey below and give us your thoughts!BackgroundFollowing a request for proposal, DTJ Design was selected to facilitate the planning process given their extensive experience in similar projects, their ability to reimage community spaces, their expertise in placemaking, and their comprehensive team that includes many locals in a wide variety of trades. The Whitman renovation is a top priority in the 2021 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan, which was created after in-depth public engagement that included over 3000 residents. The plan, among many projects and priorities, includes the Community Recreation Center, the tennis/pickleball expansion project, the Emerson Skate Park and the renovation of Whitman. 2023 saw a site master planning process for Emerson, followed by construction of a high-end skate park in 2024. Whitman is positioned for a similar progression, with site master planning occurring in 2024, followed by potential construction in the near term. Reactivation is the goal to ensure broad public usage and benefit from Whitman Park, which has historically been a gathering place for the unhoused community. The planning to renovate the downtown park coincides with the opening of the <a href="https://homewardboundgv.org/resource-center" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">HomewardBound Resource Center</a> at 261 Ute Ave. The unhoused community now has improved service far beyond from what Whitman provided. The HomewardBound Resource Center was funded by the City and is operated by HomewardBound and United Way of Mesa County. It provides a large space that can be heated and cooled based on the season, free community meals for the unhoused, a centralized space for resource navigation from service providers, and flushing toilets as well as hot showers. This new resource complements the more than $18 million provided by the City to unhoused service providers over the past 18 years, along with another approximately $8 million budgeted in 2024. This wholistic approach to a very complex problem that is facing many communities across the country, provides an opportunity to renovate and reactivate downtown parks.
