Matchett Park is a large city-owned property located on the north side of Grand Junction that has been identified for a variety of recreational opportunities. The site is currently being developed to include the Community Recreation Center and other outdoor amenities. While the recreation center project is planned for the property, the bike park area discussed here is separate from that facility and located on the east side of the park.

Several bike park features have been developed on the east side of Matchett Park, near and partially within the area identified for a future bike park in the 2014 Matchett Park Master Plan. As interest in the area has grown, the City is exploring options for how the bike park could be formally managed and maintained in the future. One option under consideration is a land lease agreement that would allow a partner organization to take on responsibility for operations and maintenance, similar to the existing arrangement at the City-owned Lunch Loop trailhead bike park.

The City is seeking community feedback to better understand residents’ perspectives on the future management of the bike park area. Specifically, the City would like to learn whether the community supports an arrangement in which a nonprofit partner would take responsibility for maintaining and operating the bike park features. Input gathered through this engagement process will help inform future decisions about how the bike park area at Matchett Park could be managed and maintained.

Several bike park features have been built on the east side of Matchett Park, nearby and partly in the area planned for a future bike park, according to the 2014 Matchett Park Master Plan.

The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA) is a non-profit partner of the City that is interested in leasing the land where the current bike park resides and assuming responsibility for the space. This would be similar to the arrangement at the City-owned Lunch Loop trailhead, where the City leases the land to COPMOBA, who is then responsible for the operations and maintenance of the bike park.

Hi, thank you for your questions.

A potential lease with COPMOBA would apply only to the bike park area, and would not affect the broader open space. Walking trails would still be allowed to exist. It’s important to note that these trails are not currently maintained by the City, as our Open Space team focuses on maintaining hard-surface trails.

Regarding parking, the concept of a designated parking area has been identified in planning documents, and it would be helpful to hear from the community about whether there is a strong need or desire for that. Community feedback plays an important role in shaping these decisions.

As for a dog park, the 2014 Matchett Park Master Plan does identify a potential location in the general vicinity. However, there is currently no funding allocated for the infrastructure needed to construct a dog park. If this is something the community would like to see prioritized in the future, we encourage you to include that in your comments.

We appreciate your input and encourage continued feedback as planning moves forward.
