Hawthorne Park is one of the City&rsquo;s four original historic parks and the City is seeking public input on how to potentially make improvements. This is one of the priorities designated in the City&#39;s Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan for the renovation and improvement of older neighborhood and community parks.To gather community input about the park, the City has created an online survey available below. The results of the community survey will be presented at a public meeting on Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the shelter at Hawthorne Park at 400 Gunnison. The community is invited to attend and provide additional input.Here are details of the current park. <div class="fr-img-space-wrap"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-us-california/545d9b7636dea68a0e7e3cfcbe41ee27c93e9336/original/1714755413/5ed81fba5f9b8e993fa8724a307ec2d7_Hawthorne_Park___Parks_Inventory_a.jpg?1714755413">2011 Parks Inventory</div> Earlier this spring, a proposal to build a bike pump track at Hawthorne was not approved by City Council based on concerns expressed by neighbors. The City is seeking to better understand what the community wants to see at this historic location through a public process that includes an online survey. Improvements might include potentially replacing the playground that is at the end of its useful life. It was installed in 1998 and 25 years is typically the length of time playground equipment lasts.Recommendations will be developed from the results of input gathered through this public process that will be presented to City Council for consideration. It is expected any funding for improvements to Hawthorne Park will be considered as a part of the 2025 budget process.

Hawthorne Park Improvements

The City of Grand Junction recently hosted two events aimed at gathering input from the community regarding interim housing. A virtual meeting took place on April 10, and an open house was held on April 18th. These events provided platforms for community members to express their opinions on interim housing regulations, including potential locations, site design, and management.Public comments are still being accepted through the Public Comment section below until May 6th, offering further opportunities for community participation and input. Additionally, future opportunities and public hearings will be scheduled and posted in the key dates section on the right-hand sidebar.This project page acts as a platform for community engagement, inviting residents to participate in the discussion and provide feedback on potential Interim Housing code development and opportunities.What is interim housing? Interim Housing is a term used by many groups, like housing organizations and some government agencies, to describe different kinds of temporary shelters. These can include places like interim parking and interim shelters. They&#39;re not meant to be permanent buildings and are meant to temporarily provide a safe shelter until more permanent housing solutions can be found. Each housing organization or agency defines it a little differently - for the proposed definition, please review the Interim Housing Draft Code under the public comment section below.Interim Housing is a new solution that has emerged as the country experiences a housing crisis. Interim Housing (Alternative Housing Options)

About the PlanAs the largest city in the region, at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers, and set among the Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa and Book Cliffs, Grand Junction serves an essential role at the intersection of the natural and urban interface to lead the Western Slope in sustainable and resiliency best practices. The recent curbside recycling programs, EV readiness plan, urban forestry program, housing needs assessment, and greenhouse gas inventory set a strong foundation for this effort and demonstrate the City&rsquo;s vision to serve as a resource management and sustainability leader. City staff has invited community members to create the first Sustainability and Adaptation community steering committee to help facilitate navigating the direction of the plan.The Sustainability and Adaptation Plan for the City of Grand Junction will provide an adaptable, yet action-oriented long-range guide to the future of the city. Review the <a href="https://engagegj.org/20624/widgets/66610/documents/49128" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sustainability and Adaptation Current Conditions</a> to learn more about the initial review of resources and the five key themes for the Plan. The process will include the discovery of innovative solutions through deep community listing and address key issues facing the community such as heat, drought, hazards, and air quality.Community InputThe purpose of this project page is for community members to provide opinions on what they believe should be included in the plan and volunteer to participate in focus groups in areas of expertise.
